Don’t Work From Home Without These Tips

I'm being serious, now, guys. I don't normally have this tone when I'm doing a podcast, but we're seeing so many IT companies that are just doing a poor job at setting up their remote workforces.

Watch Out for Threats

There's been a 41.5% increase in the amount of businesses that are now open to threats. That's because they've been intentionally opened. Your business is like a box. If you have no light going into that box, nothing inside the box can spoil potentially. As soon as light starts going in, though, you can have bacteria and all sorts of things happen, and your business is exactly the same. Your business as a box, when you open up a door, you're going to let all sorts of nasties come in. I'll put a link in the description so you can see how much more, what they call RDP traffic, is out and around on the internet, which is a protocol that can be broken into.

Don’t Cut Corners

IT companies are cutting corners and they're not putting in the right measures. You need to make sure that when you're connecting into work, you're going over a VPN, that's a virtual private network, and you need to ensure that on that VPN, you have two-factor authentication technology. If your IT company is having you double click on an icon on your desktop that has something called remote desktop where it's a little blue icon on a Windows PC, you can even get it on a Mac, don't use it. You are opening up a door that is going to let all kinds of nasties come in and wreak havoc on your work network.

Prevent Hackers

We're at the start of unprecedented times with the COVID-19 pandemic that's out and around at the moment. The last thing you want to do is lose the small amount of business integrity that you've got left by leaving the back door open for hackers to come in. If you think the virus outbreak and speed of development that this current COVID-19 virus has gone through is breaking your neck, wait until you see what's going to happen when you have all of your PCs that are normally on a work network, working from home using insecure protocols such as RDP. Make sure you don't use RDP. Do not use it. Connect in through anything else. This is going to be a small miniseries that I'm doing around the outbreak, and I'd love any input and feedback.

The Final Word

I'm happy to have anyone in our team come in and help you set up your remote workforce, come in remotely and set this up for you for free, to make sure that you don't get attacked. Don't leave it until it's too late. Hope you've enjoyed this. I'll be talking a little bit more in future episodes around some other bits and pieces to harden your work from home network. Stay good.
